Who was Charles Dickens?

Charles Dickens, full name – Charles Huffman Dickens was a highly reputed and celebrated English Writer and a Social Critic. He was born on February 7, 1812, in Hampshire, England. In his life, he created some of the most popular and world’s best known fictional characters during the Victorian Era. He is still considered one of the best Critics and Writers. People have also recognised him as the literary genius.

Early Life :

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812. John Dickens was the name of his father, and his mother was Elizabeth Dickens. His father was a clerk within the Navy Pay office. He asked the gentleman and the head of the office to be the Godfather of his son, Charles. Huffman, the Godfather of Charles, later became the inspiration of Paul Dombey, who was the owner of the shipping company in the novels Dombey and Son (1848). Charles explains his early life as idyllic.

He used to read a lot of books and novels. He played outdoors, but he couldn’t go without reading. Charles Dickens uses the sad events of his life as a child in his writings and books. Because of his father’s job as a clerk, they managed to provide Charles with some private education too.

Early Novels And Journalism :

At the age of 20, In 1832, Charles had very high self-esteem and confidence. He was enthusiastic. Although he used to enjoy mimicry, Entertainment and Acting, he still lacked the sense of what he precisely wanted to do with his life. His ideas about his future were still vague, but one thing he was sure about was that he needed fame and name.
He wanted to be recognised and known. Having some interest in the theatre and Acting, He landed with Having the first opportunity to go for an audition. He prepared himself well for the part, imitating and trying to be Charles Mathews, A comedian of that era. Unfortunately, he couldn’t go for the audition, since he caught a cold.

Before he tried to grab another opportunity in the acting, he started to set his career as a writer. In the year 1832, he presented his first story, “A Dinner At Poplar Walk”. His story was published in the London periodical monthly magazine. Later, a brother of his mother offered him a job at the Mirror Of Parliament.
He started journalism from this point. He started writing about parliamentary debates, elections campaigns and other political views. Charles also used journalism in the form of sketches, in periodicals with which later he formed “Sketches By Boz”. Boz was Charles’s family nickname that he then used as his pen name for many years.

Writing and Literary Style :

Dicken’s writing style and novel were influenced by various aspects including melodrama, picaresque novel tradition and the novel of sensibility. Satire, irony and comedy were the main aspects of the picaresque novel. His writing style was considered fully nourished and profuse linguistic creation. Dickens is a writer who’s deemed to use idealising characters and highly sentimental and emotional characters and scenes, often revealing the ugly truths and sides of the world.

Philanthropy :

In May 1846, Angela Burdett Coutts approached Charles to help and build a redemption home for the fallen women of the working class. Angela Burdett Coutts wanted and imagined a home for the women that would help them fight the existing rules and create a reformative environment for the proficiency in household and other skills and getting them steps closer to the education. Although Dickens resisted at first, then he finally founded the home named “Urania Cottage.” For ten years, he managed everything about it. From 1847 to 1859, about 100 women graduated with the help of the home.
