Who is J.K. Rowling?

J.K. Rowling, full name – Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. J.K. Rowling is a very widely-known British author, film and Television series producer, and a Philanthropist. She is recognized with her pen name – J.K Rowling. She is best known for writing one of the best selling series and books – Harry Potter. Harry Potter has won multiple awards and has sold more than enough 500 copies and is also represented in films. She is also a Crime Fiction writer with the pen name Robert Galbraith.

About the Pen Name:

Before her remarriage, J.K. used to write under the name Joanne Rowling only. Only after when the producers asked and convinced her that their target might not want to read books written by a woman, she would want to choose initials of her name. J.K. stood with “J” of “Joanne” but didn’t have a middle name for other initials. She then decided to take “K” of “Kathleen,” the name of her paternal grandmother. She often uses Joanne Murray Rowling as her name, following her remarriage. J.K. likes to call herself, “Jo.”

Life and Career:

J.K. Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. Her father, Peter James Rowling, was an aircraft engineer of the Royals Royce, and her mother, Anne Volant, was a science technician. She was born in Yate, but the family moved to Winterbourne when Jo was four. From the atomic age only, Jo started writing her own fantasy stories and would read them to her sister, Dianne. She used to read a lot of books too.

J.K. didn’t have a pleasing childhood that she talks about in her interviews too. Her childhood was complicated because of her mother’s illness and a not so happy relationship with her father, She’s still not on speaking terms with him. Because of all the trauma, she connected the character, Hermione Granger, from Harry Potter with herself. Her best friend’s turquoise-colored Ford Anglia inspired the flying version in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. She attended primary school at St. Michael’s Primary School. The headmaster at St. Michael’s – Alfred Dunn, was the inspiration behind the character Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster in Harry Potter.

Inspiration and Mother’s death:

Jo started working in London as a researcher and a bilingual secretary. After a while, she decided to move in with her boyfriend in Manchester. In 1990, when she was once traveling from Manchester to London, she got the idea about a young boy attending a wizardry school came fully into form in her mind because of the delay in the train.

Soon after, in December, her mother died after battling multiple sclerosis for ten years. The pain of losing her mother saddened and devastated Jo. She used to write for Harry Potter when her mother was alive but kept it a secret. She then speeded up the writing process and connected her feelings and emotions with those of Harry’s in great detail in the book.

Philanthropist:

  • In 2000, Jo started a charitable trust with the name Volant that uses £5.1 million of its annual budget to combat poverty and social inequality.
  • Rowling donates a large amount of his wealth to help the people fighting with multiple sclerosis for their treatment most of the time.
