Who was Charlie Chaplin?
Sir Charlie Chaplin, full name – Charles Spencer Chaplin, was born on April 16, 1889, in England. He was a well known comic actor, filmmaker, and composer. Chaplin was the personality who rose to fame during the era of Silent Film. He worked all of his life for 75 years, from childhood till on year until his death.
Early Life and Childhood:
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in England. When Charlie Chaplin was born, his parents were both music hall entertainers. Although there was no news of his parents’ divorce, they got separated in 1891. The following year Charlie’s mother gave birth to her third son, the music hall entertainer, named Leo Dryden.
Chaplin’s childhood wasn’t as pleasing. He and his family had to struggle through poverty and hardships. His mother, Hannah, had no income source other than occasionally nursing and dressmaking since Chaplin Sr. Didn’t provide them with any financial help. The situation of their house was degrading rapidly, and Charlie had to be moved into Lambeth Workhouse. After roughly 18 months later, he met his mother before sending her family to the Workhouse in 1898. The boys used to attend an institute for impoverished children.
The Start of Acting:
When Chaplin was still in school and taking care of his ill mother, he began acting. He went on stage for the first time then. By the time Chaplin was nine years of age, his interest in performing had started growing. Chaplin also wrote that his mother was the person behind giving him a push for performing; she was the one who found that he had some talent in him.
With the help of his father, Chaplin toured the English music halls for 1899 and 1900. Although he had been performing well in dancing and had made himself famous, he wasn’t satisfied with himself. Till then, he wished he could do more in a comedy act.
While he was still a member of Eight Lancashire Lads and was touring, his mother wanted him not to remove his focus from his studies. Soon at the age of 13, he left schooling. He was focused on working and earning and wanted to make enough money to fulfil his ambition of being an actor.
At the age of 14, he got his first show when his manager saw some potential. He appeared with his role as a newsboy in A Romance of Cockayne. The show opened in 1903 but closed soon, just after two weeks, because of being unsuccessful. However, Chaplin’s acting at the concert was worth the praise, and everyone liked him.
Influences:
Chaplin said that his first influence and motivation was his mother. His mother used to mimic and act the passengers while sitting at the windows. Chaplin used to see comedy actors’ performances on stage while he was touring.
The company Fred Karno used to be a training ground; from there, he learnt to vary his comedy pace. He was admired by and used to follow his favourite French comedian ‘Max Linder.’ He followed American Vaudeville while developing the Tramp persona since Tramp scenes and characters were familiar.
