As his grandfather was, his father was also a greengrocer. Alfred was a part of a big extended family with his uncle.

His father always used to try to make him disciplined. He also told in some interview about how he couldn’t remember that he ever had a playmate. When he was five years old, his father sent him to a local police station with a note. The policeman locked him up for a few minutes, saying that that’s what they do with naughty children. That event left Alfred with a lifelong fear of police officers. He was so terrified that even when he grew up, he wouldn’t also drive, saying that he might get a ticket. He wanted to stay far from the laws or anything that has to do something with that.

When he was six years old, that family moved to Limehouse and opened a shop for fish-and-chips. Till the age of seven, Alfred didn’t get to attend any school. Later in 1907, he got into The Howrah House Convent.
